So this picture has been floating around Facebook, and tends to circulate everytime a famous person dies with said person on the left side of the image, and it always rubbed me the wrong way. I decided to finally air out my thoughts on my wall. Here’s what I wrote:

What’s funny is that on days where celebrities don’t die, I hardly see anyone posting about the famine in Somalia, the massacres in Syria, or the other ills of the world. It’s only when a celebrity dies that people decide to get on their high horse and act like they’ve cared about the world’s troubles every waking hour of every day. As someone who posts a lot of political stuff, or things related to world news, and gets no responses on those posts, I get upset when I see people claiming to have a moral higher ground from everyone else because they claim to care more about world hunger than Whitney Houston passing away. Stop being such hypocrites and start giving a damn about the “real” issues when it doesn’t look like a timely attempt to go against the grain.

So yeah, if you’re Facebook friends with me and you repost shit like this in an attempt to give yourself a false sense of moral superiority to your peers, unfriend me and go fuck yourself. You’re the person who is doing a greater damage to society. The person who pretends to care and does nothing is always more of a burden than the person who lives in oblivion. Pseudo-intellectuals are just there for “I told you so’s,” but they do nothing to truly separate themselves from the flock.
